SQL Database Administrator with Beall’s Inc.



Implement and maintain databases; independently analyze, troubleshoot, problem-solve, recommend, and implement database requirements of application programming and all aspects of operations, including backup and recovery, data loading and purging, data security and access, and data replication; highly experienced in SQL Server database administration, must be able to transition seamlessly between different project lifecycle stages, provide second and third level production support, exemplify a “best practices” approach for data management - architecture, integrity, quality, and governance.



  • Reports to the Director of Infrastructure
  • Extensive interaction with various IS Departments and application owners
  • Interaction with business users, 3rd-party vendors, and onshore/offshore support resources



  • Provide primary DBA support for application databases, including space monitoring and managing security, backup/recovery, performance tuning, and database refresh processes
  • Serve as a team member on projects to advise on data and database-related issues and represent the enterprise view of the database; collaborate with project lead and others to transform logical data models into physical database designs; build physical databases to support projects; review, test, and evaluate the impact of changes to the database environment
  • Provide support to technology & business teams as needed during development, delivery, & design to guarantee robust, strong, scalable solutions
  • Manage installation and configuration, systems integrations, job scheduling, and security
  • Perform daily system monitoring: verifying the integrity and availability of all server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system/application logs for errors, vulnerabilities, and improvements, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups
  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible, automated approaches for database administration tasks; identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale
  • Provide Tier I/II support per request; perform troubleshooting and diagnostic tracing
  • Recover from hardware/software failures; coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies
  • Maintain secure, compliant, current environments by applying patches/fix packs on a regular basis; assess/recommend upgrades/feature packs and replacements as needed
  • Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures
  • Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning
  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required
  • Adhere to/contribute to best practice standards, continuous improvement
  • Demonstrate leadership abilities and positive attitude
  • Balance concurrent assignments
  • Participate in 24x7 on-call rotations




  • 3+ years of experience working as an active member of a database administration team, production DBA
  • 3+ years of support of MS SQL Server 2005/8/8R2 databases (monitor, recover, tune, design, replicate, install, configure)
  • Experience in High Availability (cluster, mirror, log ship) & high transactional systems
  • Solid understanding of MS SQL Server locking, indexing and error handling and performance tuning
  • Understanding of data infrastructure design/maintenance, architecture and security issues, and advanced troubleshooting
  • Understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives


  • Experience with Very Large Databases (VLDB)
  • Experience maintaining large number of database instances (1000+ databases in store & corporate environments)
  • Support of DB2 9.7, 10x for Windows is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of Server/PC operating systems including Windows 2008 R2, iSeries; VMWare experience
  • Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws (PCI & PII)



  • Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or IT field required
  • MCITP: SQL Database Administrator 2008 & 2012 highly desirable
  • IBM Certified Database Administrator a plus
